The
Philipsburg Tannery Site (ca.1870-1903) was once a bustling industrial
processing facility where the hides of animals were cleaned, treated,
and manufactured into leather for boots and shoes. The factory was in
operation during the late nineteenth century in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania.
Recent archaeological excavations, performed in advance of road construction,
have uncovered remains of several buildings and processing areas associated
with tanning activities.
